Diesel Air Compressors for Drilling and Construction

You need two numbers: free air delivery (m³/min) and pressure (bar). Pressure is the hammer’s working pressure plus losses from hole depth, water in the hole and the air line. Air delivery is the larger of the hammer’s consumption and the flow needed to lift cuttings, then corrected for rock type, depth, temperature and altitude. If the site has a stable power grid, electric (WPDY) has the lowest running cost, less noise and longer service intervals. Without grid power, or when the unit moves often, choose diesel (WPCY).

Choose by pressure. Up to 13 bar, single-stage is simpler and cheaper to buy. From 20 bar, two-stage is required. Between 14 and 19 bar both work: single-stage costs less to buy, two-stage uses less fuel and is better for long continuous duty.

Models with two ratings, such as WPCY360-31/25-33/18K, store two settings. One button switches between 31 m³/min at 25 bar and 33 m³/min at 18 bar, so the same unit handles high-pressure drilling and high-flow work.

Yes. Thinner air reduces delivered flow, by roughly 7.5% for every 1,000 m above 1,500 m. Size the compressor one step larger and choose a turbocharged engine with a larger cooler for high-altitude sites.

Take WPCY360-31/25-33/18K: WPCY is diesel portable, 360 is engine power in HP, 31/25 is 31 m³/min at 25 bar, 33/18 is the second setting, and K means a Cummins engine. No letter means Yuchai, X means Xichai. WPDY models are electric, and the number is motor power in kW.
